The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that The Leahy Building at 226 W. Ontario, home of Sound-Bar Nightclub, will be converted into apartments.
Sound-Bar has been a bustling Chicago nightclub since it first opened its doors in 2003. From unforgettable moments to hazy late nights, Sound-Bar has been the backdrop for countless memories over the years. Now, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the iconic Chicago nightclub is set to close its doors in eight months.
The largely vacant building at Ontario and Franklin Streets in the River North neighborhood was sold to Concord Capital, a local real estate investment firm, for $4.1 million.
According to the report, the property will be redeveloped into a 70-unit residential apartment building. Ten of the units will be located in a new two-story rooftop addition complete with private outdoor spaces and rooftop terraces. The project aims to preserve the building while transforming it into modern housing, with construction expected to be completed by spring 2028.
Drew Millard, principal of Concord Capital, is quoted in the Sun-Times article saying that Sound-Bar will vacate the building in eight months. The article also mentions that the firm will use the basement (Sound-Bar’s location) for amenities like a gym, resident lounge, co-working center, and bike storage room. This effectively sounds like the building will be fully repurposed.
While Sound-Bar faced its share of controversy over the years, including the fatal shooting of a security guard in 2019, it has been a pillar of Chicago nightlife for decades.
The club is still scheduled to have several sold-out Lollapalooza aftershows later this summer headlined by Major Lazer, LYNY, and Whethan. Darude, Fedde le Grand, and Krewella are also scheduled to play there this year.
