5 Can’t-Miss Techno Artists at the Underground Stage at Movement Festival 2023

Movement Detroit is a festival that’s perfect for exploring all kinds of techno, and the hardest hitting vibes are always found at the Underground Stage.

Movement is a unique event in downtown Detroit with a heavy focus on the underground house and techno scene. While the festival has 6 stages spread across the venue, the Underground Stage found underneath Hart Plaza is the festival’s home for hard-hitting, obscure techno sounds.

Movement Festival 2023 is taking place this weekend from May 27-29. Take a look at some of our favorite techno artists on the lineup below, and be sure to check out the set times and our review from last year to get ready for an epic weekend in Detroit.

ONYVAA, Saturday, 7-8:30 PM

Originally hailing from California, ONYVAA‘s last two EPs have come on Charlotte De Witte’s KNTXT label. She has a driving melodic techno sound that is recognizable for its analog samples and Detroit influences. ONYVAA also has her own label, Passeport Records, and she’s scheduled to play at Space Miami, Spybar Chicago, and Mysteryland Festival later this summer.

Chris Liebing, Sunday, 10:30 PM-12 AM

A pioneer of modern techno, Chris Liebing is no stranger to Movement Detroit. After performances on the main stage in 2012 and 2016, Liebing moves to the depths of the underground to perform at a side stage in 2023. Closing the festival on Sunday night, Liebing will undoubtedly bring the energy to Movement 2023. His most recent EP came out on his label, CLR Recordings, which also has hosted releases from Black Asteroid, Drumcell, Truncate, and more.

Sara Landry, Monday, 6:30-8 PM

The self-proclaimed “high priestess of Ableton” embodies an intense sound of industrial driving techno. Only a few years into her career, she has released music on mau5trap and Kraftek and been supported by Perc, I Hate Models, and Amelie Lens. Sara Landry is performing with Rodhad at The Ground at Space Miami before Movement and is touring across Europe for the rest of this summer. Her recent singles have been released on her new imprint, HEKATE Records.

SPFDJ, Monday, 8-9:30 PM

A talented DJ famous for her shows across the techno circuits of London and Berlin, SPFDJ has a high tempo techno style. Influenced by other genres like hardcore, trance, and acid, she has held residences on radio platforms like Rinse FM and NTS. SPFDJ runs Intrepid Skin, a record label for which she hand picks songs by techno artists from all over the world. Following Movement, she will perform at Awakenings and other large festivals across Europe this summer.

Klangkuenstler, Monday, 9:30-11 PM

Hailing from Germany, Klangkuenstler is another artist coming to Movement that rarely performs in the States. A former tech house and deep house producer, he has evolved into a 90s influenced techno style that is popular across Europe. He’s performing in New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit before flying back overseas for a busy festival season. Klangkuenstler’s most recent EP, Die Welt Brennt, showcases his authentic German techno style.
